Choptank employees share a desire to achieve success as a team and to mentor one another, making it a tangible part of the company’s fabric and a standout aspect of the company’s culture. Recognition for top performers is practiced regularly with monthly awards. Individual departments and teams also have their own motivational contests for achievement. Recognized by several world-class training organizations, Choptank realized early on the need to train applicants with no experience in the industry. New employees can expect four weeks of in-depth training, both hands-on and classroom sessions. Once proficient in their roles, employees confidently get started in their careers while reaping the rewards of tuition reimbursement, student-loan paydown and a list of other corporate-style benefits. And that is only the beginning; employees can stay challenged through the company’s learning management system (LMS), Cornerstone. Cornerstone is an online portal that offers on-demand micro-lessons covering a wide range of topics. Users can become experts at excel, improve negotiating skills, or learn how to use Photoshop. Choptank provides performance-based results (PBR) training for rising star employees. These classes consist of intense group sessions that concentrate on an individual’s sales training and effectiveness. Another employee enhancement opportunity is Choptank’s MOD challenge, a process improvement exercise held annually. Employees are encouraged to submit ideas for innovation and improved efficiencies within the company. Choptank employees enjoy catered lunches, massage days, team-building outings, community involvement programs, and other events, giving them an outlet to blow off steam and recharge.

How do We Define Our Culture

Choptank's core values are Commit, Adapt, Grow and Succeed. Every quarter the company highlights monthly aspects of each core value. For example, in January, goal setting is stressed. In February we review SOP's and standards, and in March, employees are reminded to focus on time management. These all fall under the umbrella of Q1's "Commit." Choptank's mission statement reveals how important the work culture is to the business. It reads, “By providing an exceptional work environment, our team will be better able to provide superior service to our customers, offering effective and efficient freight management solutions.”

What we do (products & services)

Choptank Transport is a full service 3PL or third-party logistics company offering truckload, LTL, reefer or dry, intermodal, cross-docking, container services, trailer pool and more specialized freight services.

How does what we do align with our culture and attract certain types of employees.

We sell a service, which is a little different than selling products. It relies heavily on personal relationships and industry knowledge. But what makes logistics so exciting is the technology that is leading the way. Most 3PLs like Choptank are becoming tech companies as well as brokerage firms. GPS load-tracking, freight-matching, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and autonomous trucks are just the beginning of this industry's capabilities.

Choptank's Baltimore office is in an amazing building. It boasts high ceilings, open spaces and parking lot adjacent to M&T Bank, making Ravens game and easy walk! It is also close to Pig Town and Federal Hill.

– Choptank employees receive a quarterly wellness newsletter with helpful articles about mental health, high blood pressure, weight-loss, heart disease, and other helpful information. The company also offers free biometric screening for discounts on health insurance, as well as a new B.Well phone app that helps personalize an employee’s health management through a simple, convenient web portal. Baltimore has its own version of ChopOlympics (originating in our corporate office); a fun, week-long series of team-building competitive games to help employees blow off steam. Our process for regular review and feedback for employees?

Mentoring and coaching are a part of our Core Value pledge and although it is featured every July as our Principle of the Month, employees receive regular training throughout the year through "Cornerstone" our learning management system (LMS). Choptank also conducts two annual surveys every year. One is through an outside, independent survey group and the other is through our HR, payroll, and benefits platform called Ultipro. We use these surveys to assess employee engagement as well as concerns.

Our process for career development or job advancement programs

Every salesperson hired by Choptank is given a clear career path for advancement. They are automatically enrolled in our Accreditation Program for Promotion. This series of courses combines instructor-led training with online class assignments. The curriculum is assigned depending on the job description. In addition to required learning, employees are assessed by their performance metrics and their ability to improve themselves and others through mentoring.

Our belief system about empowerment and allowing the team to develop their own work habits

Choptank encourages employees to be the master of their own destiny. The more they put into the job, the more they will get out of it. Leadership skills are encouraged, talked about, and practiced often within the company. Leadership training is part of our Development Series for employees who want to progress in their positions.

How we handle employee recognition or appreciation programs

We have monthly "Lion Awards" that recognize top performers in sales and operations. We also have an Eagle winner, an award that goes to someone who has gone above and beyond their scope of duties to help either the company or coworkers. In February, we announce the President's Club winners. This is an elite group of Choptank team members that have met certain goals within the year and as a reward, are treated to a four-day, three-night, all-expense paid trip to a tropical location with other award-winners, and of course, the President/CEO.

Things we do to promote engagement and relieve stress.

Company contests and individual team competitions are one of the stand-out things we do at Choptank. Every summer we hold ChopOlympics with a week-long series of fun and games to blow off steam and help raise money for a charitable cause. Employees also participate in community involvement events such as preparing dinners and playing softball with veterans at the Baltimore Station, recycling waste from the Inner Harbor with Mr. Trash Wheel, and other rewarding activities.
